The holidays are coming fast and with the celebrations, come the spirit of giving. With the seasons being in mind, local stores are preparing sales and the communities around the US are donating supplies to the needy.

We should all remember that this special time of the year is not just about buying and receiving gifts. There is also another meaning to the season of giving; it is the time of year for helping your community, charity and remembering to give to those who are less fortunate.

Bethany has its own way of giving back and it is a magical night. Light up night is December 5, from 5-7pm, and it is Bethany’s third annual year of celebrating the event. Holiday themed trees that are decorated by the community are auctioned off to raise money for local charities. At the past events, Light Up Night had raffles, choir concerts, and an area for children to write letters to Santa or thank you cards to the community.

Light Up Night is not the only event on Bethany College; the giving continues. “Cram-A-Van” is an event held by students and collects for people in shelters that are in need. Donations are accepted throughout November and sent to the House of Carpenter. Donations of clothes and shoes, canned goods, bathroom items, school supplies, toys and baby supplies are acceptable.

A canned food drive will also be held on campus. It will run until the last week of classes, December 9.  Cans can be brought to Jesse Penatzer’s room in Campbell Village 2 room 236 or student life.  All of the donations will be taken to the Urban Mission a church in Steubenville that is trying to feed 1,300 families.  All canned goods, peanut butter, or non-perishable food items are accepted.

So please remember to give to those in need this holiday season. Volunteer your time; throw some change and possibly contact a nonprofit organization at the Salvation Army. People do not just need help this season but all year long as well. People who are less fortunate is defined as that because they are lacking resources, not humanity. Connect with people in a new way and serve for the sake that you can. A smile can turn your day around and knowing that you are giving more than materials is the best heart warming gift to give yourself. Give because being a giving person is right.
